Teaching Philosophy

We look for curious, motivated students who value growth, connection, and independence, and are enthusiastic about living and learning in community. At Cate, the natural environment is both classroom and teacher, making opportunities for learning abundant. Sit through a physics lecture on the lawn, or explore local tide pools with a marine biology class. Our coastal setting invites curiosity, fosters exploration, and inspires a deep sense of connection to the environment and one another. At Cate, leadership starts with service. Our motto, Servons – “let us serve” – is a mindset and a practice. Support the local community through Public Service Night every Wednesday, or mentor your peers through learning labs. The transformational effects build more than just resumes; they build character, compassion, and a life well-lived. Every good lesson starts with a good question. Cate classrooms teach you to think deeply through thoughtful observations, well-formulated questions, and the confidence to ask “Why?” Interdisciplinary opportunities include Harkness-style discussions, hands-on lessons, and guided independent research. The questions here don’t stop at the classroom door; they open the door for growth. Connection is at the heart of Cate. In our residential program, students and faculty live and learn together, and relationships here run deep. You are known and celebrated exactly as you are, bringing together folks from all walks of life, and the traditions here always start and end with the same thing – community.
