We care most of all what type of person a boy is. Our principal goal is to imbue our students with a commitment to a life characterized by honesty, simplicity, respect, and concern for others. We seek to help our boys identify and address life’s deepest questions and discover who they are and what they wish to accomplish.
The Roxbury Latin School, established in 1645, is a private, all-boys day school located in West Roxbury, Massachusetts. Serving approximately 300 students in grades 7 through 12, it is recognized as the oldest school in continuous existence in North America.
Our work has been steady and sure, and our boys have flourished. We promise each boy will be known and loved, and the one-on-one advisor tradition most effectively ensures this goal. The faculty advisor’s role is pastoral. The advisor seeks to understand the total life picture of his or her advisee: the boy’s goals and values, his home and family life, his relationships with others in the school community, and his commitment to and involvement in the curricular and extracurricular life of the school. The advisor listens, counsels, and encourages—and even rebukes in appropriate doses.
The Roxbury Latin School offers Classical and Other curriculums, with specializations in STEM, Languages, and Leadership.
The Roxbury Latin School sits on a 117-acre-acre campus with Theater, Art studio, Science lab, Library, Gymnasium, Hockey rink, and Swimming pool.

Roxbury Latin cultivates a close-knit community centered on character development and shared purpose. The school maintains distinctive traditions spanning centuries—from Exelauno Day, a 130-year-old celebration of the Classics, to newer traditions like Maru-a-Pula Day and May Day that blend academic rigor with creative expression. Boys gather regularly in Rousmaniere Hall for all-school meetings called Halls, which feature guest speakers and musical performances. The school emphasizes that "we care most of all what type of person a boy is," fostering an environment where students learn to respect one another's achievements across academics, athletics, and the arts, and where honesty and trust form the foundation of daily life.
Roxbury Latin actively strives for racial, ethnic, religious, and socioeconomic diversity in its student body. The school maintains a need-blind admission and enrollment policy, admitting students based on merit without regard to financial ability to pay. The school describes itself as "democratically gathered," bringing together individuals from diverse backgrounds united by shared goals of excellence and character development. The website states that this "rich diversity—of backgrounds, experiences, perspectives, and ideas—makes for a more substantive and meaningful educational experience" and that the school encourages boys to discover the joy of knowing and understanding others whose circumstances, beliefs, and interests differ from their own.
Parent involvement details are not prominently featured on the website. The site mentions that current Roxbury Latin parents participate in information sessions for prospective families and that the school held a record-breaking Giving Day with over 1,200 donors, but specific parent committees, volunteer opportunities, or ongoing engagement structures are not described.
